News about Fiji’s first-ever Olympic gold medal goes viral within seconds

For the first time, the men of Fiji’s rugby team defeated team Great Britain making history and taking home their first gold medal in decades.  With the Rio 2016 Olympics in the headlines everyday, it’s hard for this story to not go viral on the internet. It also helped that Fiji citizens started blasting this news all over the social media world seconds after they heard about the news. The local citizens started flooding Facebook, Instagram and Twitter with their own statuses and hashtags all pointing to the first ever gold medal for Fiji.

The Fiji rugby team won by an amazing 43-7 standing over Great Britain at the end of the game making it an epic win for the country. Even when they were presented with a clear win, Fiji locals held their breaths until the last second of the game. It was said that a local bank even closed their doors to customers 30 minutes earlier just to watch the game and support their team.

 

When the locals heard the final whistle, they literally started losing their cool. They were seen dancing in the streets whilst waving their flags. Buildings and houses were also decorated with flags as a commemoration of their first-ever medal after decades of trying really hard to get one.

Amidst their countrymen’s celebration back in their motherland, the rugby team celebrated their epic win by singing a very emotional song of victory. They sang  in the middle of the grounds to show how much they have been longing for this win and how proud they were to bring back a gold to their beloved country.

 

For those who don’t have an idea, Fiji has been part of the Olympics since 1956 but failed to get a gold medal in every attempt. Fiji was a former British colony making rugby a very popular sport in the country but this is the first year that their rugby team competed in the Olympics since 1924. This makes the win more meaningful for Fiji and its locals.
